JOE MACHINE: Writer and Painter.
Born Chatham, England 1973. Grew up on the Isle of Sheppey and is
descended from a long line of Romany show people. To quote him:
“My great grandfather, John Stokes was a fighter and boxing
promoter, my great grandmother was a fortune teller and my aunt
Charlotte was a shootist on a fair ground rifle stall. She was a
crack shot, she used to challenge men to shoot in competitions.”
He draws on his colourful family background in his fiction.
His writing style is unique and combines the tough
realism of Bukowski or Billy Childish and melds it successfully
with the magical realism of Marquez. His work is strongly influenced
by the work of Genet and the Russian absurdists.
He is one of the original Stuckist painters and has
exhibited in London, Paris, various cities in Germany and the United
States. His work was included in the Punk Victorian show at the
Walker Gallery, Liverpool.
Machine has published 9 collections of poetry and
2 collections of short stories.
