The Medway Delta Press
About Us
The Medway Delta Press is a new non-profit making
publishing house dedicated to promoting the work of North Kent’s
finest artists, authors and musicians in and beyond the boundaries
of the Medway Towns. With a special interest in those voices that
emerge from the Medway Scene and Stuckism / Remodernism.
A very brief history of the Medway Scene:
In the late 1970s and early 1980s a movement of writers,
artist and musicians emerged from the Medway area of North Kent,
England: Spearheaded by the Medway Poets Group (Billy Childish,
Sexton Ming, Charles Thomson, Bill Lewis, Rob Earl and Miriam Carney).
This was augmented by the Medway Sound, a style of music that has
its roots in punk, blues and the art song or chanson.
The main exponent of this being Billy Childish and
his various groups (including The Pop Rivets, The Milkshakes, The
Black Hands, Thee Mighty Caesars, The Headcoats, The Buff Medways).
Other groups soon sprang into existence such as The
Prisoners (the most famous member being James Taylor, now of the
James Taylor Quartet), The Daggermen, The Dentists, Wipe Out, Armitage
Shanks, Auntie Vegetable, The Singing Loins, The Delmonas, The Solar
Flares plus many others.
In 1998 Charles Thomson and Billy Childish founded
the art movement: The Stuckists
which included ex-Medway Poets Bill Lewis and Sexton Ming. The founding
group consisted of 13 painters; this has now grown into a world-wide
movement of over 100 groups.
Parallel to this other poetic voices emerged from
the Medway Towns notably Phil Kane, Zara Carpenter, The Medway Mermaids
(Women's Writers group), as well as poets Wolf Howard, Philip Absolon
and Joe Machine (who are also Stuckist painters). The Medway Delta
Press will be publishing Joe’s new collection of stories in
the New Year. Three years ago Bill Lewis and Dave Wise founded the
Urban Fox Press which has re-ignited the Medway Scene. Publishing
several ground breaking anthologies and the opening of the Smoking
Dog Club, a venue for performers.
